Christine Beck of the Connecticut Poetry Society will present on one of the most influential poets in American history as part of CPS's Poets on Poetry series. Walt Whitman, who lived from 1819 to 1892, was a poet, essayist and journalist in his career. A humanist, he was part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both in his works. Controversial in his time, Whitman's Leaves of Grass has become a central piece of the American literary canon. Discussion to follow.

Christine Beck has taught poetry at SCSU, The University of Hartford and in private workshops. She hosts a monthly poetry discussion session at the Hartford Public Library, at which a local poet discusses the work of a well-known poet.
