Non-Native, Invasive Plant Species Presentation

Hosted by the Community Beautification Committee & Conservation Commission

A presentation on Non-Native, Invasive Plant Species will be given to a combined meeting of the Town's Community Beautification Committee and the Glastonbury Conservation Commission on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at 7 o'clock in the evening in the Activity Room of the Riverfront Community Center located at 300 Welles Street.

Randall Prostak, PhD, Extension Weed Specialist with the University of Massachusetts Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment will be the guest speaker and present information on the invasive plant species affecting the area, the means and methods of their control, and the past, current and future trends in listing non-native, invasive plant species along with their management strategies. Dr. Prostak started with UMass in 1994 and has been a UMass Extension Specialist since 2000 where he specializes in weed management; he also serves on the Massachusetts Invasive Plant Advisory Group.

Both Community Beautification Committee Chairman, Bob Shipman, and Conservation Commission Chairman, Judy Harper, are excited for this joint educational meeting and to have an expert speaker provide knowledge on non-native plant species that are adversely affecting the native plant communities and ecosystems in town. Going forward from here, it is anticipated that this experience will lead to more conversations and coordination between Beautification and Conservation where their responsibilities overlap with regard to land use proposals and policy.

The public is welcome to attend this meeting and program.
