Thank you for your interest in volunteering!
The Senior Services and Social Services Departments offer a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals to share their time and talents, learn new skills, and get to know some truly wonderful people in our community.
Volunteers contribute their time and talents in many ways, including but not limited to:
- Leading group activities
- Helping with Senior Center programs
- Serving as greeters who guide visitors to the Community Center
- Food service and Food Bank assistance
Volunteers act as a positive and supportive role model for program participants. They will receive ongoing training, assistance, and support based upon the job assignment.

Once a prospective volunteer completes an application, and undergoes a screening process and training (if required), they will begin their selected assignment.

Volunteer Positions and Descriptions
Building Greeters –Building greeters welcome visitors to the community center and serve as a friendly and orienting presence in the foyer of the building. They help to provide information about programs and program locations, give tours to new guests and fulfill other duties when necessary.
Shifts are available Monday through Friday from 9:00am-noon and noon-3:00pm
Friendship Circle Memory Program – Volunteer responsibilities include:
- Assist program leader in preparing and carrying out planned activities for the day. These activities may include exercises, arts and crafts, music, reminiscing, modified physical games, word games, cooking, and field trips to local sites. Volunteers also help to set out snacks at the start of the morning and cleanup the room at the end.
- If the volunteer wishes, they can lead some activities to share any special skill, hobby, or interest they may have.
- Ensure the safety and comfort of the group members by assisting them as needed during activities or at snack/lunch times. This may include ensuring their cane/walkers are available when needed, helping them as needed due to limitations in sight, hearing, mobility or memory limitations, and being alert to keep the room and walk areas clear of obstacles or potential danger.
- Actively participate in group discussions sharing life experiences and insights to build rapport with the group and help everyone actively participate and socialize.
Shifts available Tuesday through Friday from 9:00am-1:00pm
Glastonbury Food Bank - Volunteers help in the Food Bank in 3 main roles:
- Assist local residents and families while they shop at the Food Bank on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings.
- Sort and shelve nonperishable food donations on Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon.
- Pickup donated items at local grocery stores and deliver items to the RCC for distribution (pickup times arranged Mon-Fri between 9am-4pm).
Knit and Crochet Group - Create a variety of items including hats for babies in hospitals as well as hats and mittens for families in need. This group donates their knitted items to a variety of regional charitable organizations.
Program Leaders - The volunteer arrives 15 minutes prior to the start of the program, sets up necessary materials, welcomes the participants, takes attendance, runs the outlined programs, cleans up after the program and keeps staff informed of any concerns or needs.
Riverfront Community Center Café–Help to serve café sandwiches, drinks and snacks to cafe guests. Volunteers help to make sandwiches, ensure proper food handling and safety protocols are followed, and maintain a clean kitchen. Volunteers collect payment from guests and create a welcoming environment.
Special Luncheon Servers– Help serve lunch to participants during our special senior lunches. Special luncheons are a fun opportunity to connect with a number of seniors in our community and enjoy the atmosphere of live music, decorations, and a special menu.
Social Services Special Drives - Support the annual social service programs to benefit residents in need; including the Thanksgiving Food Drive, Back to School Supply Collection, and the Holiday Toy Drive.
Trip Leaders – The Senior Center runs day trips to local attractions and events. The trip leader volunteer arrives 15 minutes prior to trip departure, welcomes the participants, takes attendance, and helps everyone to get on to the bus for the trip. During the trip, trip leaders help to keep the group together and serve as a friendly and welcoming presence for the participants. Trip Leaders keep staff informed of any concerns or needs that come up during or after the trip.
