Food Service

The FDA estimates that there are approximately 48 million cases of foodborne illness in the U.S. each year leading to about 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths.  While the likelihood of serious complications is unknown, the FDA estimates that two to three percent of all foodborne illnesses lead to secondary long-term illnesses.  For example, certain strains of E. coli can cause kidney failure in young children and infants; Salmonella can lead to reactive arthritis and serious infections; Listeria can cause meningitis and stillbirths; and Campylobacter may be the most common precipitating factor for Guillain-Barre syndrome.

The Glastonbury Health Department office is committed to protecting the public from foodborne illness. There are over 170 licensed food service establishments in Glastonbury which are inspected 1 to 4 times a year depending on classification. The types of facilities inspected run the gamut from full service restaurants to convenience stores and include schools, daycares, nursing homes, and mobile vendors. Additionally, our office inspects and issues temporary food service licenses for events such as the Apple Harvest Festival. All new and substantially renovated food service establishments go through a plan review process before being issued a license.

Beauty Parlors, Nail Salons, and Barber Shops

The Health Department licenses and inspects all beauty parlors, nail salons, and barbershops in Town.  Our office reviews plans for all facilities wishing to open to ensure compliance with the Town's Specific Standards and Requirements for Salons.

Public Pools and Swimming Areas

The Health Department inspects swimming pools at apartment/condominium complexes, swim clubs, hotels, medical centers, and Town property. Pools that are open year-round are inspected quarterly whereas seasonal pools are inspected at least monthly when open.

During the swimming season, water samples are collected weekly to be tested for E. coli from Eastbury Pond and Diamond Lake.

Public swimming pools and swimming areas must be in compliance with Connecticut's Public Health Code
