Call 2-1-1 for Shelter Resources

Anyone in need of shelter is urged to call 2-1-1 to get connected to these services. United Way operates 2-1-1 as a point of contact for individuals who need shelter and transportation to shelters.

Sheltering in Place

For short term power outages and events that do not force you from your dwelling, the most preferred place to shelter is in the comfort of your own home, where you are familiar with the surroundings. In case of a severe weather warning, seek a safe place on the lower level, away from windows and preferably near the corner walls. Your clothing, food, medicine, and personal items are there to aide in your comfort. A battery powered radio or television will provide information on the event. Tune in to Glastonbury’s Emergency Management Radio Station at 1570 AM, WTIC 1080 AM, or local TV for information and resources available in town. Remember the following:

  • Stay calm
  • Bring children and pets inside immediately
  • Close and secure all windows and outside doors
  • Air quality issues - Turn off all ventilation systems that bring in outdoor air, including fans and air conditioners and close the damper on your fireplace
  • Gather your emergency supply kit
  • Shelter in place, until you're told all is safe
  • Keep sufficient cash on hand for emergency purposes. ATM and credit card machines may not be functioning
  • Keep non-perishable food and water supplies on-hand

    Local Shelters

Contact 2-1-1 for a list of local Shelters.

Much time and research has gone into the evaluation of all local shelters. Currently, regional shelters are being used to include multiple towns. Each facility is rated for the capacity, design, resources, emergency power availability and the location regarding the event in progress, among other considerations. The choice of which shelters will be opened during an emergency is determined by the type and severity of the event in progress and the needs of the community. It's common to be directed to one shelter during one emergency and a different shelter for the next emergency; even if the events are similar in nature. Always check with local officials before going to a shelter or tune in to Glastonbury’s Emergency Radio Station at 1570AM, WTIC 1080 AM, or local TV for directions regarding which shelter has been chosen for the emergency in progress.

If directed to use a local shelter, be sure to bring blankets, pillows, medicines, personal items, pet food (if applicable) and a change of clothes. PETS CAN BE ACCOMMODATED IN SHELTER SITUATIONS.  Notify a family member/caregiver of which shelter you are going to for future contact. If leaving the house for an extended period of time, please also consider preparing your house accordingly.

    Regional Shelters

In the event of a large-scale emergency, Regional Shelters, accommodating multiple towns, will be opened and residents will be notified of their location.

    Emergency Supplies should include:

    • Blankets
    • Battery Operated Radio
    • Clothing
    • Medicines
    • Flashlight with extra batteries
    • First aid kit
    • Utility knife
    • High calorie, non-perishable food
    • 3 gallons of water per person, per day
    • Toiletries
