Town-Owned Open Spaces

An inventory and overview of Town of Glastonbury owned open spaces, along with a brief summary of acquisition is outlined below. You may also click here to view a map of all Open Space in Glastonbury.

Parcel 10 - Sand Hill Open Space

This site consists of two open space parcels that adjoin each other and share the same parcel ID. They offer passive open space and are generally located south of Stanley Drive. Mountain Book is also located to the east of the end of the cul-de-sac on Sand Hill Drive. There is an access point to Mountain Brook at the end of the cul-de sac. Stanley-Tanglewood has an access point off of Stanley Drive and another at the end of Greentree Drive. 

Together, these parcels total 39.96 acres. Open space consist of streambelts, forestland, hiking trails, wetlands, and rock outcroppings. Stanely-Tanglewood was acquired by the Town of Glastonbury in 1974 and Mountain Brook was acquired in 1991.

Parcel 111 - Red Hill Open Space

This Open Space is located west of Riverview Road and is 13.76 acres in size. Open space consists of steep wooded slopes to the Connecticut River with walking trails. Open space was acquired by the Town in October 1991.

Parcel 168 - Tollgate and Chimneysweep Open Space (includes Delponte, Canepa, and Coffield)

The Tollgate and Chimneysweep Hill open space was acquired through purchases totaling 93.5, 15.7, 5.5, and 63 acres.  In total, nearly 180 acres of open space is preserved through these independent land purchases taking place between 2003 and 2008.

Parcel 176 - Old Maids Lane

In 2004, the Town acquired 4 open space parcels totaling a combined 115 acres with Nayaug Elementary School located on a portion of one of the 4.  The land was acquired for open space preservation, outdoor recreation, and to serve as the site for the new Elementary School.  Subsequently, Glastonbury purchased the 16 acre former 'Purtill' property, which is bordered to the south by the Town-owned and operated Bulky Waste landfill.  A final purchase of the 6 acre former 'Funk' parcel, adjacent to Nayaug School, was then completed to augment the space.

Parcel 177 - Cavanaugh, Marchand and Ricciardi Open Space

The Town purchased these open pace parcels, located off Dickinson Road, in 2005 and 2006 in cooperation with the State DEEP and The Nature Conservancy {Cavanaugh and Marchand}.  These open spaces complement the neighboring state open space.

Parcel 178 - Salster Open Space

The former 'Salster' parcel is a 25 acre open space purchased by the Town in 2004.

Parcel 180 - Reardon Open Space

This 21.5 acre open space was purchased in 2006 in cooperation with the Great Pond Stewardship Committee.  This parcel links to the Chamberlain Lane Open Space, which was acquired through a subsequent purchase in 2018.

Parcel 194 - Coldbrook Open Space (includes Yanaros)

This 47+ acre parcel, adjacent to the former 'Yanaros' property located off Chestnut Hill Road, was purchased in 2011 for open space and natural resource preservation.

Parcel 217- Old Maids Lane

Parcel 218 - Chamberlain Lane Open Space

The 44± acre Chamberlain Lane open space (OS) is consistent with the Town's goal of preserving open space and orchard lands in the Matson Hill area.  This OS was purchased in 2018 with funding assistance from the Great Pond Stewardship Committee and complemented by efforts to acquire the development rights to the nearby Rose's Berry Farm.  This joint venture between the Town and owners of Belltown Orchards was also completed in 2018.
