Post Date:10/07/2024 4:07 PM

The Town of Glastonbury is pleased to announce that it has achieved Gold-level certification through the 2024 Sustainable CT Program. The Gold (highest) certification recognizes the Town’s recent and ongoing successes across a vast spectrum of sustainable initiatives ranging from training to policy development, community projects, and best practices. Specifically, Glastonbury was recognized for its energy efficiency, initiatives supporting local farms, invasive species management, recycling programs, bicycling/pedestrian improvements, arts & culture programming, affordable housing, community education, infrastructure, and equitable citizen engagement.

As part of the 2024 program cycle, Glastonbury was awarded 855 points for completing 43 actions in 12 sustainable categories, well exceeding the 750 points required for Gold certification. Through these efforts, the Town of Glastonbury also renewed its Climate Leader Designation, which is presented to communities that demonstrate commitment to reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for the impacts of climate change.

Sustainable CT announced the latest certifications through a press release issued on October 7, 2024. The Town of Glastonbury is one of only five (5) Connecticut municipalities to be recognized for achieving Gold Certification this year, which is valid for the three-year term of 2024-2027. Since the inaugural Sustainable CT program launched in 2018, Glastonbury achieved the Silver-level certification (formerly the highest level attainable) for the 2018-2021 and 2021-2024 terms. In 2023, Sustainable CT introduced the new Gold-level certification to expand the degree of recognition for municipal efforts. To date, only six municipalities throughout the state of Connecticut have attained the prestigious Gold Certification. This achievement underscores Glastonbury’s dedication and leadership in sustainable practices.

“This notable achievement is largely attributable to the work of Town staff throughout the organization and the continued support of the Town Council,” said Jonathan Luiz, Glastonbury Town Manager. “Many thanks to them for their vision and perseverance, which continue to drive sustainable initiatives from concept to fruition here in Glastonbury.”

The Town will be formally recognized at the 2024 Sustainable CT Awards Celebration to be held at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook this November.
