Community Conversation - The Inclusive Community: Affirming LGBTQIA+ Experiences

Hosted by the Glastonbury MLK Community Initiative and Glastonbury Pride

On September 25th at 5 PM, the Glastonbury Martin Luther King Community Initiative (GMLKCI) and Glastonbury Pride will present a community conversation focused on helping all of our citizens understand the needs and challenges of the LGBTQIA+ community. The event will take place at the Riverfront Community Center, 300 Welles Street.

We will hear from members of the LGBTQIA+ communities about their experiences growing up in Glastonbury and the barriers they confront in non-inclusive environments. The speakers will include Lecturer and Activist Dusty James Rader and another presenter (to be announced). The discussion will be moderated by Jennifer Snow, GMLKCI Board Member and the Librarian for Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) at Yale University.

Attendees will learn about the different groups that make up the LGBTQIA+ umbrella and how we can work together to make Glastonbury a more welcoming and inclusive community for everyone.

This event will consist of three parts: 1) an overview of terminologies used in the LGBTQIA+ community, 2) a moderated panel where members of the LGBTQIA+ community will share their experiences, and 3) a discussion of challenges that may cause some people to feel excluded from their wider community. Time for Q&A will follow. LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups will also be at the event to share information and resources .
